Women from different age groups fall in love for the saris from Bhagalpur. It may be due to the tradition of the old demography of Bihar by the side of Ganges to weave special kind of silk that bears the signature of the place. We face enough queries about these saris throughout the day at our saree shop in Gariahat.
Despite presence of a large number of weavers there, the technique adopted in Bhagalpur is called a dying one and that has helped to set it apart from the regular art silk saris available in our country. The silk is separated from the cocoons by devising a special process. The approximate count of people involved in the process is around 100 thousand. The total number of weavers present in the area is 35000 and there are around 25000 looms as of now. The annual turnover from the Bhagalpur Silk business is around 100 crores INR per annum. The designs taken up in these saris are gaining more popularity as increasing number of renowned fashion designers from all over India are incorporating these designs in their latest collections.
